Have you ever heard of Nootropics? Nootropics and Brain Health
NOOTROPICS – WHAT ARE THEY?
Nootropics are very popular worldwide.
“Cognitive Enhancers” are being used by millions to enhance mental performance in healthy people.
The name, Nootropics, consists of a class of chemicals, whether they are natural ones or man-made ones, yielding cognitive benefits to our Brains, and which all fall under the umbrella name of Nootropics, called by this name by Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea, Psychologist and Chemist.
He was the one, in 1964, who synthesized the Nootropic called Piracetam. This was a compound which he discovered, shown to improve and boost the memory, to boost learning and creativity as well as verbal fluency and brain circulation. Eight years later, in 1972, he first coined the word “Nootropic”.
These Nootropic substances, in order to be called Nootropics, need to comply with a few requirements which are:
- They must enhance the ability to learn and to aid the memory.
- They must help the brain to function under conditions which are disruptive such as in electroconvulsive shock or hypoxia (low supply of oxygen).
- They need to protect the brain from physical and chemical assault, such as what comes from barbiturates and anticholinergic drugs. (medications that block the action of acetylcholine, a type of neurotransmitter).
- They must increase the efficiency of Neuron Firing Control Mechanism in both the sub-cortical and cortical regions of the brain.
- They must not possess a lot of side effects, needing to be almost non-toxic.
Nootropics have really gained in popularity today because we are living in such a stressful and fast-paced society.
This means if you can live a more Vibrant Life with Excellent Brain Health because of your excellent memory, your focusing skills, your intelligence, and creativity as well as motivation, then you probably want to learn more about the wonders of Nootropics and might be taking them already.

Diana, yes, nootropics can be great health enhancers. How long have you been using them, and with what effects?
Happy New Year!
This was a very interesting article. I’ve never heard of nootropics because I generally try to stay away from pharmaceutical of all kinds. So it was nice to learn of a medicine that had a lot of positive effects on the brain and had having little to no side effects be one of the requirements of being part of that classification of drugs. it’s always good to learn something new.
Hi Kebba! Thank you for your comment regarding Nootropics. I have been using Herbal Nootropics for over 30 years. I did not realize earlier that Korean/Panax Ginseng, and some of the other Sunrider nutrition I use, can be called Nootropics… I have only been hearing the word “Nootropics” for the past couple of years, but Brain Enhancing formulas (including some prescription drugs…) are called Nootropics. Even Caffeine is considered a Nootropic! The Sunrider herbal nutrition has helped me with clearer thinking, better memory, and has kept me young!! I’m in my late 70s, and I am on ZERO prescription medications, and feel Wonderful, and the Sunrider products for almost 30 years, have been a huge contributing part of that! Diana
Hi Pam! Thank you for reading my article on Nootropics. I also avoid pharmaceuticals of all kinds. I only learned of the category of Nootropics a couple of years ago. Even Caffeine is classified as a Nootropic! My choice of Nootropics is Herbal Nutrition from Sunrider (for the past 28 years) and in particular Korean (Panax) Ginseng, which is very helpful for Brain Health, as well as the Sunrider Calli Tea, which I have daily.
