Eye Health Nutrition

July 19, 2023 By Diana Walker 4 Comments

Eye Health Nutrition Diana Walker Young Living Ningxia RedEye Health Nutrition Protect Your Eyes and Eyesight

Our eyes may be small, but they are mighty and our eye health nutrition is of tremendous importance.  Our eyes have an incredibly important job and we depend on our eyes far more than we probably realize.

They don’t just give us the visual picture of what’s in front of us.  They help us sense danger, bring vivid colors to our memories and they are instrumental how we respond to any given circumstance or situation.

Have you ever cried watching a breathtakingly emotional scene in a movie?  You don’t know those people.  They are actors, and yet we can be moved to tears by visual stimuli.

You see someone crying or smiling, you see a child in danger, you see a homeless person with a sign that you read asking for help.  All of these things bring forth an emotional response.  The power of the eye is really astounding.

Over time though, our eyes begin to change.  It could start early in life or you might not have much in the way of vision changes until well into your 40s.  Either way, gradually and very slowly, our eyes begin to deteriorate.  That said, it’s critical we learn to care for our eyes to ensure they last an entire lifetime.

Let’s go over some of the most valuable tips and tricks for eye protection to keep them from getting worse, or at least slow it down.

Eye Health Nutrition ~ Healthy Diet and
Antioxidants Lutein and Zeaxanthin
Click here to learn more about Ningxia Red:
https://dianawalker.com/ningxia-wolfberry-goji-berry/

A diet rich in antioxidants, such as Lutein and Zeaxanthin, is a great start for eye health.  You can find these in dark, leafy greens like kale and spinach.  Also contained in Ningxia Red (also called Goji Berry or Wolfberry).

Our body turns beta carotene into vitamin A, an essential vitamin, which is great for eye health and vision.  Beta carotene can be found in many fruits and vegetables including sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash, broccoli, grapefruit and carrots.

Quality Sleep

Getting enough good quality sleep is how you give your eyes a much-needed break.  They are hard at work from open to close and need to recharge.  Your eyes give you plenty of signals that they need some downtime.  Blurry vision, dry eyes, burning and itching are all indications it’s time to shut it down for a while and rest.

Sunglasses and Hats

Invest in quality sunglasses and wear those hats!  It’s not just a fashion statement anymore.  You want to protect your eyes from harmful UVA and UVB rays from direct sunlight.  In case you weren’t aware, your eyes can be sunburned just like your skin.  An additional benefit of sunglasses and hats is your eyes won’t have to strain so much under the glaring sun.

Limit Screen Time

Unless you live completely off the grid, screens are everywhere.  We’ve become pretty dependent upon them.  If staring at a computer is how you make a living, make sure to take breaks for the sake of your eyes.

We tend to blink way less when we are looking at something up close which can lead to dry eyes.  It’s a good idea to try and stay away from screens as much as possible when you aren’t working.

Truth:  Worsening eyesight is inevitable and a result of the natural aging process.  Another truth:  Diet and nutrition can play a key role in eye health and slow down vision deterioration.

Eye Health Nutrition for Healthy Eyes

As a kid many of us were told to drink our milk for strong bones and teeth.  Our parents begged us to eat spinach claiming it would make us strong.  We were also urged to eat our carrots for healthy eyes.  The funny thing is, these are all actually true and not just a sly way to encourage a healthy diet.

Our eyes have a very important job for their size, and it would be wise for us to consider diet and nutrition as a major factor in keeping our eyes healthy.  After all, we only get one set of them for an entire lifetime.  To date, there are several organs where transplants are possible.  Eyes have yet to make the list.

Keeping up with annual comprehensive eye exams and maintaining good control of other health conditions, like diabetes and hypertension, are only part of the equation for healthy eyes.

Let’s look at a few diet and nutrition suggestions that will give your eyes a natural boost of healthful benefits.

Vitamin A

Being deficient in vitamin A can lead to dry eyes, night blindness, corneal ulcers and a host of other eye issues.  The good news is there are plenty of ways to include vitamin A in your diet.  Vitamin A can be found in animal-derived foods such as liver, egg yolks and dairy products.

On the plant-based side, you can go for leafy greens, carrots, grapefruit, and many others to get a good dose of beta carotene which the body will then turn into vitamin A.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Studies have shown there to be an abundance of omega-3 found in the retina so it’s thought to help maintain vision functions, or at least a part of it.  We already know omega-3 is important for brain development, but new evidence is showing benefits with dry eye disease as well.

Additionally, those with diabetes may be at lower risk for developing macular degeneration if they maintain adequate levels of omega-3.

The best source for omega-3 is oily, cold-water fish like salmon and herring. There are over-the-counter supplements with varying amounts of omega-3 to aid in getting the recommended 1,000 mg per day.

Vitamin C

The risk for cataracts and macular degeneration are decreased with vitamin C.  Again, the best source is from nature and can be found in oranges, strawberries, broccoli and sweet peppers, among other fruits and vegetables.  Over-the-counter supplements are available for purchase as well.

Vitamin D

The benefits of vitamin D are said to include the reduced risk for macular degeneration, which is an age-related eye disease.  The best, and cheapest, source of vitamin D is natural sunlight.  Just a few minutes of exposure to the sun daily gets you what you need.

Salmon, milk and orange are also other great sources of vitamin D.  If none of that works for you, get vitamin D supplements over-the-counter at your local pharmacy or department store.

Lutein & Zeaxanthin ~ Carotenoid Antioxidants for Eye Health

Also said to give an added layer of protection against cataracts and macular degeneration is lutein and zeaxanthin.  These are the yellow carotenoid antioxidants located in the macula, which is the central portion of the retina.   They are said to aid in blocking blue light; think of sunblock you apply to your skin.

Once again, look for the richest concentration of Lutein and Zeaxanthin in leafy greens, but they can also be found in sweet corn, egg yolks, pistachios and red grapes.

Of note:  Carotenoids are best absorbed when they are ingested with a good source of fat.  Eggs are high in fat, so they are a perfect idea packaged in a little shell.  Adding an avocado to a leafy green salad with an oil-based dressing is also a great way to hit all the high points.

Just like many other “suggested” ways of eating, diet and nutrition which can benefit eye health is mostly from natural sources.  Processed foods offer the least nutritional benefits and can even speed up the very diseases you are trying to avoid.

By no means is this an exhaustive list, but it should definitely give you some food for thought.  Not to mention a starting point for your next trip to the grocery store.  Hopefully you’re already doing a great job with nutrition and diet and this list just reinforced your choices.

Essential Oils for Cleaning

Numerous cultures have been using essential oils for cleaning for thousands of years.  Essential Oils have been used to treat diseases, promote better health, and for numerous household purposes. In the past few years, essential oils have grown in popularity and understanding as more people are embracing a holistic approach to cleaning, healing, and wellness.

These non-toxic, inexpensive, natural products have hundreds, if not thousands, of uses, and smelling great is just the tip of the iceberg.

Adding essential oils to your cleaning cupboard, medicine cabinet, and beauty regimen is easy, and we’re here to help you find the best uses for you and your family. The vast and varied uses for these botanical extracts may astound you, so keep reading to learn some of the many different ways you can use essential oils around your home.

Essential Oils for Cleaning and Freshening

  1. Add a few drops of grapefruit, bergamot, lime, or lemongrass essential oil to a refrigerator box of baking soda the next time you clean your refrigerator. You’ll have a fresh, clean-smelling refrigerator for several months.
  2. If you have lingering food odors in your home, place a pot of water on your stove to simmer, then add a few drops of cinnamon, clove, or any citrus essential oil to clean the air.
  3. Get a fresh burst of clean scent every time you vacuum. Place a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a cotton ball, then drop it in your vacuum’s filter container or bag. You’ll get clean  and fresh air every time you vacuum.
  4. To keep your trash bins smelling fresh, sprinkle the bottom of the bin with baking soda, add a few drops of lemon, grapefruit, or geranium essential oil, then place your bag in as usual. No more food odors!
  5. Add a few drops of lemon essential oil to your dish sponge after every few uses to keep it fresh and disinfected.
  6. Create your own pet deodorizer spray. Fill a small spray bottle with apple cider vinegar, then mix in ten drops of lemon, lavender, or geranium essential oil. Shake well, then spritz on carpet, pet bedding, in the air, or anywhere pet odors are a problem.
  7. Kill mold spores in the air by using tea tree oil in your favorite diffuser.
  8. You can use lemon or orange essential oil to dissolve sticky or stubborn substances. Add a few drops to glue, chewing gum, wax, or other hard-to-remove stains, and rub.
  9. Create a homemade countertop disinfectant by combining three ounces of warm water with three drops each of tea tree oil and lemon oil in a spray bottle. Use this to spray countertops to create a germ-free kitchen.
  10. Make your own produce wash using grapefruit or lemon essential oil. Add water to a large bowl or your sink, add several drops of oil, then soak or rinse fruits and vegetables before storing them in your refrigerator.
  11. Remove soap scum from your shower naturally. In a large spray bottle, add four drops of tea tree oil and four drops of eucalyptus oil to warm water. Spray your shower, then wipe down to reduce mold and eliminate residue on surfaces.
  12. You can also create your own bathroom scrub. Add one-half cup of vinegar and five drops of lime or orange essential oil to one-half cup baking soda, then immediately scrub your bathtub, shower, or sink.
  13. If you already use natural cleansers, you can boost their cleaning and deodorizing powers by adding just a few drops of either grapefruit, lemon, or orange essential oil.
  14. Sprinkle a few drops of citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, lavender, or peppermint essential oil around doors and windows to keep flying insects at bay.
  15. If you have unwanted pests that you want to eliminate, combine clove and orange essential oil together, then spritz on pests to kill them on contact.
  16. 16. If you have burnt-on food stuck to cookware, add water and a few drops of lemon essential oil, then bring to a boil. Allow to sit until the water cools, then the food should come right off.
  17. Clean your carpets with your own carpet powder. Add several cups of borax and 20 drops of tea tree oil together, then shake onto carpet before vacuuming or using a carpet cleaner.
  18. Keep your bedding mite-free by adding several drops of eucalyptus essential oil and water to your next load of sheets or blankets.
  19. Add lasting fragrance to your sheets or towels, as well. Start with a clean rag or washcloth, then sprinkle this with ten to fifteen drops of your favorite essential oil. Place this in the dryer when you are drying your linens to infuse a fresh scent that will last until your next washing.
  20. Keep your carpets smelling fresh with homemade carpet deodorizer. Add baking soda and several drops of lavender, lemon, peppermint, or bergamot essential oil. Sprinkle the mixture over carpet, allowing it to rest for at least 15 minutes. Vacuum and enjoy fresh, clean carpets.
  21. If you have a child or adult in your home who plays sports, you know how smelly sports gear can get. Start with two quarts of warm water, then add two drops each of lemon and tea tree essential oil. Add four tablespoon of baking soda to this, and use this mixture to clean sports equipment, uniforms, and other musty or stinky gear.
  22.  To assist your dishwasher in giving a spot-free rinse every time, add three drops of lemon essential oil to your dishwasher before beginning the wash cycle. You’ll be amazed at the difference.
  23. Painting your home can give you a fresh, beautiful new look but also leave you with lingering paint odors. Add ten to twenty drops of peppermint essential oil to your can of paint before applying, and lingering odors are a thing of the past.
  24. If you have a space that smells of cigarette smoke, try this natural solution. Combine four drops each of eucalyptus, tea tree, and rosemary essential oils into a small spray bottle. Spritz this around your home wherever smoke smells linger, and you’ll notice the difference.

Essential Oils for Mental Health

Essential Oils for Mental Health

Essential Oils for Mental Health – Often it is necessary to reach out for help through what is thought of as traditional medicine. One downside is a too-often dependence on synthetic pharmaceutical products, many of which have proven to compound the problem they were supposed to be fixing.  While this may be the ‘easiest’ solution, it’s not the only or necessarily best one.

There are options available that have been used and proven for centuries. These are often not endorsed, and sometimes disparaged, by ‘big pharma’ because they don’t have the same financial benefits to themselves.

One of my favourite Essential Oil Blends is called “Peace and Calming”.
Read more here:  https://relaxwithoils.com/peace/

Essential oils, to someone unfamiliar with their benefits, through aromatherapy, topical application (including massage) and ingestion, may seem too simplistic to be considered a ‘real’ treatment.

However,  there is research and practical, beneficial methods and ingredients for alleviating some of the debilitating symptoms of suppressed
mental health. Essential oils are powerful, considered safe if used properly, and readily available, as is professional advice on correct application.

Olfactory System Essential Oils for Mental Health

Many people have questions as to how Aromatherapy and Essential Oils can help bring relief to so many common maladies experienced today, including mental health problems.

Although aromatherapy essential oils and their benefits are still being researched, evidence from many studies shows that aromatherapy works, and starts with the olfactory system.

This olfactory system works together with the brain’s limbic system.

The limbic system is primarily composed of:

  • Hippocampus
  • Amygdala
  • Hypothalamus and
  • Cingulate Gyrus

These are the parts of the brain that play a role in regards to

  • Memory
  • Emotions
  • Hormones
  • Nervous System
  • Heart Rate
  • Blood Pressure
  • Attention

Scent from Single Drop of Essential Oil

The scent from a single drop of an essential oil can have a profound impact on a person’s mind and body.

Sense of Smell is 10,000 times More Acute Compared to Our Other Senses!

Our sense of smell is 10,000 times more acute compared to our other senses.
In contrast to the small number of basic tastes, humans are able to recognize more than 10,000 different odors. Unlike taste, humans are amazingly sensitive to smell. We are able to detect the aroma of certain volatile compounds at the level of one part per trillion, and a few at levels even 1000 times lower.

Essential Oils for Mental Health ~ Messages Sent to the Brain

The moment a scent is inhaled, messages are sent to the brain. These messages can bring instant relief to many common health issues.

Some mental health problems include, anxiety, depression and stress, SAD – seasonal affective disorder, and mood swings.

Insect Repellent Citronella Essential Oil

Insect Repellent Citronella Essential Oil and Lyme Disease and Ticks

Lyme Disease and Other Tick-borne Diseases

What are Ticks?

Ticks are small parasites that exist by sucking blood from a host. Ticks are not insects but have eight legs and are from the same family as spiders. There are hundreds of tick species distributed over the world.

Most are non-injurious to human health. However, some ticks can cause severe irritation and others are dangerous.

Depending on the tick species, that host can be human or animal, including birds, mammals and even cold-blooded reptiles and amphibians. Different tick species target different hosts.

Note from Diana Walker:  “This is personal for me.  At the age of 8 years old, I remember my Dad burning out a tick from the top of my head!!  We lived on 70 acres with lots of forest.”

How do Ticks Spread Disease?

Ticks do not stay permanently attached to one host. When they choose a human host they bury their mouthpiece into the skin to suck blood to keep themselves alive. The volume of blood they consume is inconsequential, health-wise, what is more important is what they leave behind.

Some tick species which attach themselves to humans inject a mild anesthetic while they are attached, similar to that injected by a mosquito. For this reason, many people are unaware of the tick while it is attached. As with a mosquito bite, this can cause itching for a period even after the tick has been removed.

Most medical authorities consider that Lyme disease is transferred in North America by Blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks or bear ticks. Their botanical name is Ixodes scapularis.

The specific pathogen that is responsible for Lyme disease that is transferred by the tick is called Borrelia burgdorferi.

Many people who see a rash on their skin understandably assume that it is simply an insect bite that will heal in a short time. However, if it is the result of a tick bite and you live in a high-risk area, there is a possibility that it may develop into Lyme disease, and warrants professional medical attention.

Insect Repellent including Citronella Essential Oil

Insect Repellent  ~ Citronella Essential Oil is famous for being a plant that insects really do not like!

This plant adorns many patios and yards for this reason, and the synthetic version is a smell most of us can call to mind easily from long days spent outdoors, whipping out the toxic sprays. Many Insect Repellents contain DEET.  Be sure you read the labels!

In 1998 the Environmental Protection Agency conducted a definitive assessment of the chemical. The agency turned up 46 seizures and four deaths that were potentially linked to Deet exposure. DEET-related health problems include skin rashes and scarring in adults and, in a few cases, reports of neurological problems in children.

While toxic sprays can be harmful for our bodies, the real thing in concentrated Citronella Essential Oil form is incredibly potent – with a pure and beautifully FRESH scent!

Tick happily walks through this.
2. Tick placed inside ring of Young Living Insect Repellent

Does not like the Citronella Essential Oil in this Insect Repellent, and other Essential Oils

Insect Repellent

Insect Repellent (USA) from Young Living is a natural, essential oil-infused alternative to traditional bug repellent that effectively prevents mosquito, flea, and tick bites.  Who remembers using DEET?  This natural insect repellent definitely is “Deet-free”.
Insect Repellent Citronella Essential Oil Young Living Diana Walker #24845567

Children Face a Higher Risk of Contracting Lyme Disease

Since children play outdoors in grassy areas more than most adults, their chances of being infected with Lyme disease by a tick is higher.

Children are more likely to suffer from central nervous system infections too, and if the tick is not immediately removed properly, the danger of suffering from more infections becomes imminent.

It is believed that pathogen transfer is not instantaneous and that the longer the tick is attached the greater the risk.

Under spring-like conditions tick numbers can explode. In known times of high tick activity, it is prudent to do a body check on children after playing outdoors.

  • Ditch the DEET and use natural, Essential Oil infused alternatives to traditional bug repellent.
  • Find one made with 100% naturally derived plant-based ingredients
  • Use a gentle formula that is free from harsh chemicals, that is appropriate for use on children and is hypoallergenic.

I was at Aquafit today.  My friend Cheryl said that her Number 1 favourite Young Living Oil is THIEVES.
She uses it every day. She often uses it on her tongue as a support to her Immune System.  (Thieves Vitality can be put into a vegetable capsule and taken that way). Thieves formula can be gargled in an ounce of water to help soothe tired throats.

THIEVES is a Legendary Blend

This blend has a rich, spicy aroma.

THIEVES BACKGROUND

Formulated by Young Living founder, D. Gary Young, this blend was created from research recorded in the archives of the British Museum library about a group of 14th century European perfumers and spice traders who rubbed oils on themselves while they robbed the dead and dying. This is the first essential oil blend to be scientifically evaluated in a university research laboratory.

Thieves would sneak into graveyards to rob from the dead and dying.
Legend says they protected themselves by creating a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals.
Today, Thieves essential oil blend is inspired by those tales of old.
Combining Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Lemon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils, this blend is one of Young Living’s most popular products.
