Essential Oils and Aromatherapy for Stress and Brain Health
Essential oils are primarily used to reduce stress and anxiety through aromatherapy, massage, or a combination of both.
Until recently, it was thought that Aromatherapy only helped people to relax because the smells are enjoyable.

Aromatherapy, Sense of Smell, and Emotions
As we’ve learned more about the way that our sense of smell is related to our Emotions, some researchers have started to consider Aromatherapy in a somewhat more sophisticated sense.
Aromatherapy, Serotonin and the Brain
In 2013, researchers in China suggested that Aromatherapy helps to combat stress by activating serotonin pathways in the brain.
Serotonin carries out many important functions in the body, including changing the diameter of blood vessels and regulating digestion. According to WebMD, many scientists also believe that low serotonin levels can contribute to depression.
Definition of Serotonin:
“Serotonin is a chemical that carries messages between nerve cells in the brain and throughout your body. Serotonin plays a key role in such body functions as mood, sleep, digestion, nausea, wound healing, bone health, blood clotting and sexual desire.”
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are concentrated oils extracted from plants. These are a pretty big topic right now in just about every field that touches on human health and wellness.
From food packaging and preparation to sanitization and sports medicine, but perhaps mostly mental wellness, there is a huge and growing body of research on how essential oils benefit human health and the human brain.
For all of their other amazing properties, much of the research related to essential oils has been about their potential ability to help people reduce stress and anxiety, mostly through aromatherapy, massage, or a combination of both.
Essential Oils and Aromatherapy for Stress and Brain Health
Essential oils have been clinically proven to have a soothing and relaxing effect on both the body and the mind.
Remembered Scents Trigger Emotions
There is a close relationship between areas in the brain responsible for scent, emotion and memory.
Choosing the appropriate scent that has positive personal associations for you is important. A happy-thought provoking smell will improve the level of healing experienced.
Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
It is always best to buy essential oils from a reputable supplier. Ensure they are therapeutic grade oils. Therapeutic grade oils are a higher quality than commercial grade oils. They are free of toxins and chemicals, are steam distilled, unfiltered and undiluted.
Synthetic essential oils will not have the same therapeutic effects. Fragrances made from chemicals lack the therapeutic properties of essential oils. Synthetics may mimic the scent, but do not have the same biological responses.

Diana, aromatherapies are a great adjunct to health care and mood care. You make good points about how they work, and how “fragrances” are not therapeutic and may even be completely synthetic. You may not want to know what ingredients they are using in the synthetics.
