Sleep ~ Time to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Introduction

Did you know that sleeping at least eight hours a night decreases the risks of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type II diabetes?

Good quality sleep is an essential component of your good health.

However, just like eating right, staying hydrated, and exercising moderately, getting a better night’s sleep should be one of the first improvements you make to create a healthy and productive lifestyle for yourself.

A better night’s sleep will also help you reduce stress, improve your memory, and boost your mood – in addition to all the physical health benefits.

Here are a couple of the recommendations from my book:

DO Optimize Your Bedroom for Sleep

Turn your bedroom into a sleeping sanctuary. Get the best mattress you can afford as well as the best window treatments, sheets, pillows, and so forth.
When it’s all designed to help you relax and get more sleep, you will get more sleep.
Make your bedroom an oasis for sleeping and relaxation.
When you do this, you’ll notice the moment you go inside your room that you start to feel relaxed.
The colors of paint you choose, the bedding you pick, and the mood you set all make a big difference in the quality of your sleep.

DON’T Look at your Phone or Electronics

If you’ve closed your eyes, repositioned, and tried another 20 minutes to fall asleep and you can’t, remember to avoid looking at your phone or electronics anyway.
Even though you’re awake, it’s best to avoid that so that your mind doesn’t get used to being entertained in the middle of the night.

  1. Here it is 1:30am and I’m reading a blog about getting good sleep! LOL My sleeping habits have changed drastically in the past year, I hardly ever get to sleep before 3am and I’m up between 6-7am. I do find that the Sleepy Time herbal tea helps at times and I have given up all electronics at bedtime. My brain just races and there is no sense fighting it. Hope you have a good night’s sleep.

  2. Getting a good night’s sleep is hard, even following tips like yours. Also as a part-time working Hockey Mom who is out and about until late and has to work the next morning, eight hours is not possible, but I am happy if I don’t lie awake more than half an hour after getting up to pee in the middle of the night.

  3. I never had sleep issues until I hit menopause. Now I have periods of time where I won’t sleep well for days. Once I’m awake, that’s it. The key for me is staying asleep.

  4. I was sleep deprived for most of my working life being a shift worker (nurse) I used to pride myself on how little sleep I needed. Stupid, I know. It took quite a few years of retirement before I got back on tract. Now I am a morning person, getting a good night of sleep most nights.

  5. I’ve heard that not getting enough sleep can lead to dying sooner than you would otherwise, so I agree it’s very important! I don’t quite get enough sleep right now, but I’m working on it.

  6. Hi Jeanine! Yes, I’m sure lack of sleep can contribute to aging faster!!! Sleep is when our body gets time to heal… It’s hard to always get the sleep we need, though!!

  7. Hi Lily! Oh, I do remember also priding myself on how much work I could do… and how I could get by on little sleep. I worked at the Hospital in Adminstration, was a single parent of 2 boys, and had very little sleep during those years!! I’m glad that now in retirement you have been able to get back on track and get a good night’s sleep most nights!!

  8. Hi Martha! I absolutely loved your comment! It is so funny….. you, reading my Sleep blog post at 1:30 am…. You certainly do not get much sleep!!! Thanks for making me laugh!!
