While working with your doctor and a mental health professional for therapy, medication, or a combination of the two is the most effective treatment method, there are tons of different ways you can enhance the way you care for yourself.

Anxiety Natural Way 1: EXERCISE Make sure you’re getting plenty of joyful movement and exercise into your day.

Joyful movement and exercise are different from regular old hit-the-gym types of exercise (although if you really love going to the gym, then do it!).

You are more likely to consistently engage in exercise and movement you seriously enjoy and look forward to doing. For example, if you really like taking nature walks, going to your hip hop dance class, or kayaking, you are far more likely to make time for those exercise activities on a regular basis because you actually want to do them.

People who force themselves into exercise or movement that doesn’t excite them won’t consistently incorporate them into their schedules. For example, if you loathe walking on the treadmill, you’ll eventually stop using your treadmill because the activity feels too forced and unappealing to continue.

The most important key to getting joyful movement and exercise to ease anxiety is consistency. When you exercise, your body releases a feel-good chemical called endorphins. When the endorphins flood through your body during and after exercise, you feel an instant mood boost. For example, runners often describe experiencing “runner’s highs” after finishing races – this is really the major rush of endorphins they’re feeling!

Anxiety Natural Way 2: NUTRITION Squeeze a wide variety of nutritious foods into your daily diet.

The human body requires lots of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to function at its very best. Make sure you’re filling your diet with plenty of nutritious foods to ensure you’re getting your fair share of everything your body needs to function well.

There are a variety of products used in processed foods such as artificial sweeteners, artificial colourings, artificial flavours, sugars, and preservatives that are linked to mood swings and other temperament issues in people. Plus, eating a diet full of sugars can lead to blood sugar issues, which can cause mood shifts to happen quickly.

Your anxiety isn’t going to lower when you aren’t feeling and functioning at your best, so limiting your intake of processed foods and increasing your intake of nutritious foods may help calm you and take the edge off your anxious feelings.

If you do not get enough sleep, you are certain to see an increase in issues with anxiety. However, anxiety issues can make sleeping well a big challenge. Do everything you can to ensure you aren’t making your sleeping schedule suffer – for example, create a bedtime routine that allows you to relax before bedtime, choose to go to bed at a reasonable hour, and make your sleeping space relaxing. While anxiety may make sleeping feel like a challenge, making simple sleep habit changes like these ensures you’re doing everything you can to not make the issue even more difficult.

Natural Way 4: RELAXING ESSENTIAL OILS AND HERBS  Add chamomile into your day.

The idea of sipping a warm cup of tea is a relaxing thought all on its own, but when you take a closer look at the research that suggests chamomile may be a strong ally for folks with generalized anxiety disorder, it looks even more appealing.

A 2014 study published by PubMed Central showed that participants who took German chamomile in capsules up to five times daily during their study showed an immense decrease in anxiety-related stressors versus the group who took placebo capsules instead. In a different 2005 study published in the Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, chamomile was shown to help rats who struggled to fall asleep actually fall asleep more quickly and effectively than rats in the study who were offered a placebo option.

Natural Way 5: AVOID ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE  Avoid consumption of products linked to neurotransmitter effectiveness, such as alcohol and caffeine.

At first, alcohol may seem like an easy way to take the edge off anxious feelings. It’s easy to access, tasty to consume, and widely accepted by society as a way to kick back and relax.

However, alcohol dependency to manage anxiety symptoms can lead to even more anxiety – and an alcohol dependency issue in some people. It is common to see alcohol use disorder and anxiety disorders forming and existing together.

While anxiety may increase temporarily in the early stages of someone’s sobriety, once they have an opportunity to allow their brain chemistry to adapt to the lack of alcohol, the anxiety will taper off and improve.

Caffeine intake can also exacerbate anxiety symptoms. There is ample research to show that caffeine and anxiety are not an ideal pair. Since caffeine causes jitteriness and jumpiness, it can send anxiety symptoms over the edge, making them feel much worse than usual.

While a controlled, moderate intake of caffeine (much like a controlled intake of alcohol) is safe for most people, folks suffering with various anxiety disorders should strongly consider limiting how much they consume each day. To begin to feel the effects of lowered caffeine intake, remember to start slowly – taper off your caffeine intake slowly to decrease the chances that you’ll suffer any caffeine withdrawal symptoms, such as nasty headaches.

Anxiety Common Myths for anxiety disorders, like many other issues surrounding mental health, are often a topic of misunderstanding and confusion. Unless you’ve experienced an anxiety disorder, it’s difficult to understand exactly what’s happening inside a loved one’s mind as they struggle to find peace with their anxious feelings.

There is quite a bit of misinformation and misunderstanding surrounding what it means to have an anxiety disorder. Understanding some of the common myths surrounding anxiety disorders can make it easier to differentiate fact from fiction.

Anxiety Common Myths 1: “Anxiety isn’t a real illness because it’s really just an emotion.”

Yes, feeling anxious is an emotion that everyone experiences from time to time. Feeling anxious before certain events, such as going on a first date or speaking in front of a crowd, can stir natural feelings of anxiety. However, anxiety is also an illness that requires serious attention.

When anxiety stretches far beyond the parameters of temporary discomfort, it’s more than just a temporary feeling of normal, everyday anxiety. When people develop feelings of anxiety that are persistent and health-altering, they’ve entered the realm of experiencing a true anxiety disorder. This type of persistent anxiety creates serious, life-affecting challenges that make it difficult for the person to participate in their normal, everyday routines.

Anxiety Common Myths 2: “An anxiety disorder will eventually go away on its own.”

People experiencing anxiety disorders may feel their symptoms ebb and flow, depending on what’s happening in their lives. For example, someone with an anxiety disorder may experience a period of time where their symptoms are minor and less noticeable than usual.

However, these fluctuations doesn’t mean the person is completely “cured” or that the anxiety is gone forever. While it is possible for anxiety disorders to calm down over time, it’s important to remember that anxiety can flare up and create issues for people at any given time of their lives. It’s important to remember that triggers, major life changes, and other circumstances can cause anxiety to return. Similarly, anxiety can fade away as other life changes occur that facilitate a drop in anxious feelings.

Anxiety Common Myth 3: “If you have anxiety, you should just avoid whatever it is that makes your anxiety feel triggered or heightened.”

If you could completely avoid any of your particular anxiety-inducing triggers, life would be quite simple. However, making the effort to completely avoid your triggers (or any other potentially anxiety-inducing situation, for that matter) is a fruitless attempt.

The fact of the matter is that anxiety is unavoidable. People face all types of anxiety-causing situations everyday; feeling some stress and anxiety is a normal human experience. Similarly, if a person puts themselves into a situation where they never have to worry about experiencing something potentially stressful, they isolate themselves from living a truly exciting and fulfilling life.

For example, a person who feels anxious in crowds may vow to never find themselves in a situation where they could find themselves surrounded by people again. If they followed through on this thought process, they’d avoid a lot of things that are fun, such as concerts, shopping centres, movie theatres, theme parks, and more. This type of self-imposed ban on potentially crowded spaces may save them from some anxiety, but at the cost of a lot of great experiences and chances to live their life enjoyably.

Anxiety Common Myth 4: “Anxiety disorders are weird because they aren’t very common.”

 This is one of the most easily debunked myths about experiencing an anxiety disorder! According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, anxiety disorders are the most commonly diagnosed types of mental health illnesses in the United States of America.

Almost 40 million American adults are currently living with some form of diagnosed anxiety disorder. That is roughly 20% of the adult population living in America. This figure only takes into account the number of people with a formal diagnosis – there are quite likely far more people with anxiety disorders that either haven’t been diagnosed yet or (sadly) may never be officially diagnosed.

These numbers are incredibly staggering. If you ever feel alone or weird for having an anxiety disorder, it’s important to remember that there are many people who understand what you’re experiencing because they are going through the same experience, too. While you might feel weird, you are certainly not strange at all – there is a large group of folks who can directly relate to your experiences.

Anxiety Common Myth 5: “Social anxiety isn’t a real thing…that’s really just when someone is being shy.”

Shyness happens. Much like anxiety, it’s a normal feeling people experience on occasion, particularly when they don’t feel like being social or find themselves in an unfamiliar or uncomfortable social setting.

Shyness tends to be more of a personality trait. A shy person may be susceptible to developing social anxiety disorder, but being shy itself is not characterized by panic, extreme anxiety, or any of the other symptoms that tend to accompany an anxiety disorder. A person may be incredibly shy, but once they’ve had an opportunity to get more comfortable in a new social setting, they’re able to break through that initial feeling of shyness and be more sociable.

Social anxiety disorder is far more reaching than having shyness as part of your personality makeup. A person with social anxiety disorder is extremely consumed with the possibility that they could embarrass themselves or make themselves look foolish in front of a group of people. This fear begins to build into anxiety that is difficult to conquer; it may even persuade them to avoid social interactions or any situation where they may be required to socialize altogether.

Unlike simple shyness, having social anxiety is a life-affecting condition. A person with social anxiety experiences notable mental anguish when they’re placed in a position where they’re required to interact with others. This anxiety can even push itself into reactions such as an anxiety attack.

Stress Relief Natural Methods

The damaging effects of Chronic Stress are becoming more widely recognized and discussed.

Symptoms can be
* Physical
* Mental or
* Emotional, or all three.

The effects on a person can be far-reaching and affect all aspects of their life. Those suffering from Chronic Stress very often also adversely affect those around them, whether loved ones or work colleagues.

Even when stress is recognized as the cause of troubling symptoms, sufferers may be at a loss as to how to overcome the problem. For most people it is not as easy as simply removing the stress or removing themselves from the cause of the stress, as our lives are usually more complex and demanding than this will allow.

A major part of overcoming the damaging effects of stress is learning to better deal with the stressors that ultimately lead to Chronic Stress. If those things causing the stress can be dealt with without triggering an elevated stress response, the mind and body will be so much better for it.

Additionally, even if stress responses do occur, positive steps taken to restore the body quickly to a healthy recovery state will prevent  individual stressful events from developing into Chronic Stress.

Essential Oils for Health: Is It Possible to Use Essential Oils to Keep Calm?

These days, there seems to be an essential oil for whatever ails you. Anything from impulsive behaviors to ADHD can find relief from essential oils. There are several available that are supposed to have calming abilities.

Essential oils are not new. They have found uses in medicine for a few thousand years. There has been a resurgence lately, most likely due to the widespread use of the internet.

While there are benefits to using essential oils, they should not be a replacement for proper medical care. It’s a controversial topic and one that is not currently regulated. Also, most essential oils are not for ingestion.

The primary use is for the aromas they emit. Essential oils are concentrated and powerful.

Many essential oils have an expiration date. If you find over time that they do not smell the same as when you first bought them, this could be the reason why. The benefits they are supposed to give will probably diminish over time as well, and so you need to buy the correct sizes for your needs. If you are a casual user, try to find the smallest bottles possible.

Lavender is an essential oil that is particularly useful in keeping you calm. It is meant to handle anxiety, which is one of the leading causes of stress and not being calm. It is also a multi-purpose oil that has antiseptic properties among others. Calming is a particular attribute.

Another oil that is supposed to help with anxiety and depression is Ylang Ylang.

Sometimes, essential oils can lose their effect as your body becomes accustomed to prolonged use. For this reason, it’s best to vary the oils that you use for calming.
